The Care Center Foundation’s original building was built in 1860 and is considered a historical landmark in Chester County. The Care Center for Christ was founded in 1982 by the Reverend Carl Guthrie and Dr. Gary Cashon as a street mission. The purpose of the center was to put into practice
1 John 3:18, “My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.” and
Matthew 25:40, “I tell you the truth, whatever you have done for the least of these, you have done to me.”
After the purchase of the property and a building on the corner of Matlack and Barnard Streets in 1987, the Care Center for Christ transformed what was formerly known as the Side Track Bar into a place of safety and security for neighborhood families and the children. The Care Center for Christ Foundation has been serving families in the East End Community of West Chester since 1982. Responding to the need for childcare and employment assistance, the Care Center continues to provide a continuum of educational and recreational assistance from six (6) weeks to school years.
On a corner where drugs and violence were commonly encountered families now find opportunities and hope.
In 2007 the Care Center expanded it’s programming with a licensed full day Pre-School, Day camp, an after school program offering tutoring, literacy and ESL programs.
On Wednesday, December 19, 2012 the Executive Director, Mrs. Blondell Parson, serving as ED for seven (7) years, hosted the Care Center’s Kick Off Ceremony for it’s “Our Building Renovation Project”.
“From my first day with the Center it has been my dream to see a new Care Center rise up and serve our community.” said Mrs. Parson.
And so the transformation began……
