The Importance of Holiday Traditions for Children’s Growth and Well-Being

December 28, 2025

By Wendy J. Wallace, DO, President of CCF

This month is filled with excitement and opportunities to share. Many cultures, faced with the short days of winter, long cold stretches, and frequent illnesses, created celebrations of hope and traditions that bring joy to families. Whatever your religion or culture, this is a time for community. Families gather together, share stories, give gifts, and open their hearts.

Children as young as 18 months can experience the joy of hiding a gift in wrapping paper and giving it to someone they love. Sharing at dinner what you’re thankful for can be a simple way to help children build inner self-esteem. Modeling this kind of sharing reassures children that the world is a safe and loving place.

Families who create traditions and celebrations leave positive memories in every child’s mind. May your holidays be filled with loving memories and joy this year!
