Winter Warmth Tips for Babies and Young Children

January 21, 2026

By Wendy J. Wallace, DO, President of CCF

Keeping children warm in winter can be a challenge. I used to keep a box of mittens, hats, and boots by the back door, simply because these items tended to get lost in the house or out in the world. Having them accessible at the exit door made sure little fingers stayed warm and heads and cheeks were covered before we stepped into the chilly winter air.

Because infants have a higher fat ratio in their bodies, they tend to get chilled more quickly, especially their cheeks and bottoms. A good rule of thumb is to count the number of layers you have on and make sure they have at least one more. Mittens tend to keep fingers warmer than gloves. Hats are a must, since much of their body heat escapes through their heads. And if they’re still feeling cold, warming up some chocolate milk will help restore their inner warmth and chase the chill away.
