Bedtime Routines for Children: Embracing the Fall Time Change
By Wendy J. Wallace, DO, President of CCF
Bedtime routines for children become especially important in October as leaves are falling, the air is getting chillier, and the dreaded clock falls back one hour!
Having children adjust to an hour’s time difference can be challenging! That extra hour is a gift, though. Sleep is a gift for children.
Children ages 3–5 need 10–13 hours of sleep per day, including naps. You can see if they need more by their actions: a short fuse, big emotions, trouble focusing, or meltdowns by afternoon.
Enjoy fall and the weather changes, and embrace your child’s need for sleep by keeping them on a consistent bedtime routine that lets them know you love them and respect their needs.
