I Spy Game: A Pediatrician’s Favorite Waiting Room Activity

July 10, 2026

By Wendy J. Wallace, DO, President of CCF

The I Spy game is a simple, timeless activity that can turn waiting time into playful learning.

As a pediatrician, I loved walking into the exam room and finding a parent and child playing I Spy. Our exam rooms were simply decorated, so the challenge was on to find things to spy. The simple game of naming an object’s color and then taking turns guessing always brought smiles and silliness that lessened the anxiety of waiting for the doctor.

The game is portable and teaches colors as well as the names of items in a room. And there is no age limit—so take advantage of wait times with your child and play I Spy!

Playing I Spy encourages observation, builds vocabulary, teaches colors, and helps children feel calm while they wait. Image: pexels.com
